About the

Teresa jo scholarship

The Teresa Jo Scholarship is a memorial scholarship created in honor of Walter Crain’s baby sister, Teresa Jo.  Teresa Jo was born in June 1961.  She was diagnosed with hydranencephaly at Walter Reed Hospital at the age of 6 months. After her parents divorced in 1962, Teresa Jo was raised, along with her brothers David and Walter, by her mother, Emma Jo.  Teresa Jo passed away and went to Heaven on July 1963 at the age of 2.

Rather than focusing on the tragedy of her daughter’s death, Emma Jo chose to pursue a career in education.  Inspired by the memory of Teresa Jo and by the Grace of God, Emma Jo successfully completed her GED at the age of 26.  She then went on to get her bachelor’s degree in special education while raising two boys on her own and working two jobs.  Emma Jo became an excellent special education teacher and, after a few years, went on to get her master’s degree and, ultimately, a Ph.D. in special education.  Her dedication and determination helped countless special education students and future teachers.

Walter and Michelle have two adopted children, Sydnie, born in 2002, and Samuel, born in 2005.  Had their birth parents chosen not to place them for adoption, they would have been born into poverty.  The idea of the Teresa Jo Scholarship was born out of the Crain’s’ realization that, without financial opportunity, children like Sydnie and Sam would have difficulty affording the cost of a Christian education. In memory of Teresa Jo and the impact she had on her mother, Emma Jo, the Crain’s started the Teresa Jo Scholarship to assist children in obtaining a Christian education they may not have otherwise been able to afford.  The Teresa Jo Scholarship is currently providing tuition for 10 children at area Lutheran schools!!!!!

With your help, we hope to provide financial assistance to more children who want to

pursue a christian education and further develop a one on one relationship with

jesus christ .
